I've been recommending a book by Jill Bolte Taylor called "My Stroke of Insight" to everyone I know. It's an amazing story, both uplifting and powerful on three levels: physical, emotional, and spiritual, but the spiritual aspect alone makes this the best book I've read all year.

How often do you get to hear a neuroscientist describe having a stroke, nearly dying and finding Nirvana, and then making a miraculous recovery so that she's back to teaching medical students!?!

I came away with a renewed sense of understanding, wonder and hopefulness about the capabilities of the human brain. I give "My Stroke of Insight" highest marks!

You can get the book from Amazon.

Hi,

Thank you for your kind words.

Your point is well taken.

It is extremely difficult to change the habits of mind and the thinking of a people who operate out of a linear orientation. And whose epistemological frame is one of being an individual whose life and actions are divorced from those of peoples in the distant past or future.

And I do see it changing.

The work as I see it, is not to change the thinking that precedes our actions, but to shift the center out of which our thinking arises, so that our actions are more harmonious for ourselves, each other and the Seven Generations Who Walk Through Time Together.

Excellent post, I think you have summarized the meaning of this phrase beautifully. The question is, can we get contemporary Western oriented cultures to think this way? Western culture is linear, oriented to the future or the past, and it is extremely hard for someone with this epistemological upbringing to think in a way that might begin to capture what the "seven generations" is really implying. But I guess it is our responsibility to try as well.

It seems to me that we all have the same fundamental qualifications: we can choose to not eat tuna, fish sticks or other wild foods, to use reusable bags when shopping, to walk or ride a bike when possible, the list is endless.

And we can be free with telling others what we are doing and why.

Hi Ben,

I'm happy to put a link to your site here on my blog.

As for M. Szymborska, she is an amazing poet, able to write about very dark subjects while still keeping her words filled with light. A quality I much admire. You can find several of her works online if you do a google search. Better yet, buy one of her books - New and Selected Poems is a good volume. It has her Nobel Prize acceptance speech, which while written in prose, is a poem unto itself.

Thanks for the valuable work you and you organization are doing.

I suspect that is why it is a BBC news production. If you check it out on youtube this video only has about 1,000 people who have viewed it.

I trust that once people really see the consequences of their actions they will make the changes needed.

Thanks for visiting.

Wow. I tried to bring my cloth bags to Walmart, but they can't use them on those carousels.

Can you imagine a news story like that on tv in a Bush administration?
